Wind Turbine Maintenance Amidst March’s Low Winds and Ice Challenges

Fact sheet March 2024
Average wind speed (m/s)ca. 6.4 m/s
Production (GWh)ca. 28 GWh
Safety and environmental incidents0

Production in March was affected by lower average winds. There was also the effect of ice.

During the low wind days, the team did some tasks of the planned maintenance. Maintenance will continue from April onwards. The goal is to perform the maintenance when there is light wind.

With the end of winter there is a mix of melt and ice conditions. It is important that if you are moving around the area, pay attention when you are near the wind farm.

Nevertheless, the is still the effect of ice, with some snow, a lot of snow!

As the year starts, it’s all about planning the maintenance, and finalizing the initiated task in 2023.

Due to the winter and icing conditions, it is important for people to pay attention when going in the vicinity of the wind farm.

Average wind speed (m/s)ca. 8.1 m/s
Production (GWh)ca. 22 GWh
Safety and environmental incidents0

In December, the production was mostly affected the effect of ice as well as few days with low wind.

December was a quiet month. The current activities are for example:

  • Blade repairs (including blade exchange)
  • Snow plowing
  • Some troubleshooting

Due to the winter and icing conditions, it is important for people to pay attention when going in the vicinity of the wind farm.

September has been a maintenance intensive month again. The current activities are for example:

  • Blade repairs
  • Wind turbines inspections
  • Site clean up
  • Maintenance/repairs at the site building

Some roads are getting prepared for the winter season, and snow poles have been ordered.

In 2023, to date, the remaining activities are:

  • Completion of blade repairs started in 2022 as well as the one scheduled and started in 2023
  • Continuing the planned annual maintenance as per the maintenance manual
  • Site inspections
  • HSE audit

September has seen the beginning of the autumn, and some colder temperatures at the end of the month.

In August, the production was mostly affected…

In August, the production was mostly affected by the the lower average wind speed and the planned maintenance. Also, there has been few hours we an unplanned outage on the DSO side.

Fact sheet August 2023
Average wind speed (m/s)ca. 5.8 m/s
Production (GWh)ca. 22 GWh
Safety and environmental incidents0

August has been a maintenance intensive month, as the wind speed gets lower, and production losses minimized. The current activities are for example:

  • Blade repairs
  • Wind turbines inspections

Some roads are also receiving care to ensure proper condition prior next winter season. This is done throughout the months of June, July and August.

In 2023, to date, the remaining activities are:

  • Completion of blade repairs started in 2022 as well as the one scheduled and started in 2023
  • Continuing the planned annual maintenance as per the maintenance manual
  • Site inspections
  • Repairs at site building
  • HSE audit

In August, the permitting authority also conducted an annual wind farm visit and review.

In June, the production was mainly affected by the the lower average wind speed and the planned maintenance.

Fact sheet June 2023
Average wind speed (m/s)ca. 6.3 m/s
Production (GWh)ca. 27 GWh
Safety and environmental incidents0

The focus in June was to continue the started maintenance tasks, and carry out the next tasks in the annual planned maintenance during the low wind day, with for example:

  • Blade repairs
  • Wind turbines inspections
  • Some statutory inspections

There is also the maintenance of the civil works (roads condition) to ensure proper condition prior next winter season. This is done throughout the months of June, July and August.

In 2023, the remaining activities are:

  • Completion of blade repairs started in 2022 as well as the one scheduled and started in 2023
  • Continuing the planned annual maintenance as per the maintenance manual
  • Site inspections

In May, the production was mainly affected by the planned maintenance. Nevertheless, it was also compensated by a higher average wind speed.

The focus in May was to carry out the next tasks in the annual planned maintenance during the low wind day, with for example:

  • Blade repairs
  • Wind turbines inspections
  • Some statutory inspections

There is also the planning of the review of the civil works (roads condition) to ensure a maintenance prior next winter season.

In 2023, the remaining activities are:

  • Completion of blade repairs started in 2022 as well as the one scheduled and started in 2023
